OVERVIEW

Sabah Biodiversity Enactment 2000 (SBE 2000) was enacted by the Sabah State Legislature in December 2000. Such an enactment provides a legal framework for the safeguarding of biodiversity and biological resources of the State. To implement such an enactment, SBE 2000 requires the establishment of the Sabah Biodiversity Council and Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC) as institutional framework to ensure such biodiversity is managed in sustainable manner.

Borneo Project Shines Light on Tarsier, Slow Loris (New Straits Times)

KOTA KINABALU: The collaring of two female nocturnal primates recently have created a buzz among scientists conducting research in Kinabatangan. The primates, a tarsier and a slow loris, were each found nursing their offspring at the Danau Girang Field Centre in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Danum, Maliau and Imbak can be World Heritage Sites (The Borneo Post)

KOTA KINABALU: Yayasan Sabah’s head of conservation and environment division, Dr Waidi Sinun, said Sabah has a strong chance of getting all its three conservation areas to attain recognition as World Heritage Sites.The three areas concerned are the Danum Valley, the Maliau Basin and the Imbak Canyon conservation areas.

30-hour Effort to Save Killer Whale (New Straits Times)

THERE was no shortage of volunteers when a desperate request was made to help keep a stranded male pygmy killer whale afloat and alive at a resort, here. The killer whale was guided and released into the sea at 5.10pm, yesterday, after it showed signs of activeness but not after nearly 30 hours of coaxing it to stay upright in the water with help from 40 volunteers.
