Y.A.B. CHIEF MINISTER DATUK SERI MUSA HAJI AMAN

HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI 2006 MESSAGE

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Praise and thanks be to Allah Subhanahu Wataala because by His grace and generosity, it is once again my great pleasure to convey my cordial message on the occasion of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

On this auspicious day, I, Musa Haji Aman, my wife Faridah Haji Tussin and our family extend our warmest Hari Raya Aidilfitri greetings to all Malaysians in Sabah.  Once again, we are blessed that are able to celebrate our festivities this year in peace, prosperity and harmony.

For Muslims, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a symbol of grace and glory after going through the trying month of Ramadan.  The celebration of Aidilfitri is rewarding after Ramadan during which every Muslim has to practice and uphold the true spirit of fasting. This month-long celebration revolves around the exchanging visits and greetings among family members and friends in the spirit of goodwill whereby people of different race and religion mingle freely with one another. Hari Raya Aidilfitri also serves a special occasion for reconciliation and forgiveness for one another in the Muslim community.

The true spirit of Malaysia transcends the barriers of race, religion and culture, which have enabled its people to jointly celebrate all the major festivities in the country.  Our way of life fosters the spirit of oneness and pride while promoting integration amid religious and cultural diversity. We are a multi-racial society in which every culture and ethnic group has a place and role in the development of the country. As such, we should not lose sight of the need to forge unity and harmony in spite of such ethnic and cultural diversity.  This is no less important than achieving progress and prosperity.

While we rejoice in the celebration, we must also be thankful that Malaysia is far removed from the ravages of war and the destructive forces of mother nature.  We must also not forget that there are those who are less fortunate and are not able to celebrate this day in a conventional way. A helping hand will go long way to the less fortunate especially on an occasion like Aidilfitri, which is a time for giving and sharing. Let us also remind ourselves not to be exceedingly extravagant in our celebration and be more prudent in our spending especially in light of escalating oil prices and global economic uncertainties.

This year’s Aidilfitri comes at a time when the Ninth Malaysia Plan is its first year of implementation. We are stepping up the rate of development in both the economic and social sectors and through strategic planning, I believe we have good grounds for optimism over greater economic growth. With the present good rapport between the State Government and the Federal Government, I am confident that we will see a great deal of socioeconomic development.

The State Government has already taken action to conserve the state funds by pruning unnecessary spending aimed at improving Sabah’s financial position especially in the implementation of projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.  With the large allocation rendered to Sabah under the plan, we are determined to fully implement various projects, which have been planned for the benefit of the people.  In particular, the Government will give priority attention to rural development in our efforts to uplift the living standard of our rural population.

Rest assured that every citizen, irrespective of race and creed, will have their rightful place in society and will receive the same opportunity as others to improve their standard of living.  In our multi-racial society, there must be goodwill, tolerance and unity between the many communities so that we can facilitate greater development in Sabah.  I trust that with continued hard work and cooperation of everyone we will continue to achieve good progress in the coming year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to convey my gratitude to those in the Armed Forces and the Police for their services in safeguarding security in the state.  Because of the call of duty, they have to leave family behind, even on a festive occasion like Hari Raya.  As such, on this special occasion, we greatly thank the Security personnel for their sacrifice and vital role in maintaining peace and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.

Once again, on behalf of my wife and family, I wish the people in Sabah “Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.  Maaf Zahir dan Batin.

Thank you.
