Sabah to send 310 member contingent to Sukma 2000-30/3/2000


KOTA KINABALU:        Sabah will send a 310-member strong contingent led by Chief De Mission and Permanent Secretary  of  the Youth, Culture and Sports Development Ministry, Noni J. Said to  the 8th  Malaysian Games, Sukma 2000 in Pulau Pinang from 25 May to June 3.


All athletes participating in various games including karatedo, taekwondo,weight lifting, gymnastics, bowling and soccer among others will begin a three-day centralised training  at the Likas Sports Complex  from May 19.


Of the 21 sports, including squash which Sabah will take part for the first time, the state contingent targets a total of  64 medals - 19 gold, 21 silver and 24 bronze.


Chief Minister Datuk Osu Hj. Sukam who received  the Sukma 2000 delegation led by  Pulau Pinang Deputy Chief  Minister, Dato Dr. Hilmi Hj. Yahya here today, said he was satisfied with  Sabah’s preparations.


The delegation is visiting Sabah to garner support for Sukma 2000.


Osu has also directed state officials to learn from  Pulau Pinang’s handling of  Sukma 2000 in preparation for the next games which Sabah will host in 2002.


Sabah will propose 26 sports for Sukma 2002 and plans include the upgrading  of various sports facilities.


            Selection and preparation of  state athletes will begin right after  Sukma 2000.
