THE MALAYSIAN ENVIRONMENT WEEK (MEW)
The Malaysian Environment Week (MEW) is celebrated annually from 21-27 October. In Sabah this year, MEW was launched on 18 October at the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre by the Director of the Department of Environment. Various events are organised to commemmorate MEW this year. Some of them are the Mangrove Challenge for Students at the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre, Beach Cleaning Up Activities, Environmental Camps, Radio Talk and Quiz Programme and the Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar (SERASI) Awards Ceremony.

The SERASI Awards Ceremony will be held on 25 October 2008 and will be graced by Yang Berhormat Datuk Masidi Manjun, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah. The ceremony will be attended by schools, government departments, private sectors and also NGOs.

TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR) OF THE SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (SEIA) FOR "THE PROPOSED UPPER PADAS HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT BY SABAH ELECTRICITY SDN BHD"
This is to inform the public that the Environment Protection Department is in the process of reviewing the draft Terms of Reference (TOR) of the Special Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) Report for "The Proposed Upper Padas Hydro Electric Project By Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd".

SABAH SHORELINE MANAGEMENT PLAN (SSMP)
The State Cabinet Members in their meeting on 11 July 2007 has approved the SSMP, a plan formulated under the 8th Malaysia Plan to be used by all relevant government departments/agencies involve in managing, planning and regulating development activities along the coastal areas of Sabah. As a follow-up to the circular released by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (ref: KPKAS.JPAS(S) 800-0/4(39) dated 20 November 2007) a workshop will be held on the 29 April 2008 between 8.00 am to 1.00 pm at the Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu. The aim of the workshop is to enhance the understanding on the SSMP implementation procedures.

FUNDAMENTALS OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT COURSE
The Environment Protection Department (EPD) in collaboration with Chemsain HRD Sdn. Bhd. will be conducting a two (2) days course on the Fundamentals of Environmental Management on 26 – 27 February 2008 & 28 – 29 February 2008 at Beverly Hotel, Kota Kinabalu. The course is specially for Environmental Officers appointed by Project Proponents to ensure implementation of mitigation measures and environmental conditions as stipulated in the Agreement of Environmental Conditions of the EIA approval. The objectives of the course are:-
  • To develop understanding and appreciation for the environment and its functions;
  • To develop sense of personal responsibility and accountability towards protecting and conserving the environment;
  • To explain the purpose and requirement of the environmental regulations; and
  • To enhance the understanding on the role and responsibility of Project Proponents and Environmental Consultants in environmental protection and conservation.
