The Sabah Education Department in collaboration with the Environmental Conservation Department (ECD), Department of Environment (DOE), Environmental Action Committee (EAC), and World Wide Fund (WWF) Malaysia, will be organising the Environmentally Friendly School Award (or SERASI) to Secondary Schools in Sabah in conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia Environmental Week 2003.
This Award is given to accomplish the following objectives:
- To increase an awareness of the importance of conserving and protecting the clean and green environment in schools;
- To instill a positive and nature caring attitude among school students;
- To encourage initiative among schools in organising environmental activities; and
- To give due recognition for sustained efforts by schools in carrying out Environmental Education Programme.

The Environment Protection Enactment 2002 was enacted in 2002. However, this Enactment is not yet enforced. The Department is currently enforcing the Conservation of Environmental Enactment 1996.
