What we mean by wildlife eco-tourism is that your visit is:

to a natural area in order to enjoy and appreciate wildlife and nature in a way that is environmentally responsible so that there is little impact on the environment and so that your visit provides for involvement and benefits to local people and promotes conservation of nature.

Protected areas in Sabah have been created for the protection and management of natural resources, including wildlife. The Government of Sabah has established a wide range of wildlife-based eco-tourism opportunities within protected areas.

Activities that are permitted are those with only minor and acceptable impacts upon the environment, including bird watching, wildlife observation, nature education, camping, photography, filming, swimming, canoeing and rafting.

Activities which are not permitted in protected areas include collection of plants and animals as souvenirs, cutting of wood for camps and fires and activities that pollute groundwater and waterways.

Many of these areas are easily accessible by road and boat. Accommodations are also available in some areas.  Generally this can easily be arranged with local tour operators. In some of the areas visitors are charged in order to provide funding to support management and protection. Charges may include entrance fees,  fees for a camping site, camera, video and filming permits.
