SPEECH BY CHIEF MINISTER OF SABAH, Y.A.B. TAN SRI DATUK SERI PANGLIMA MUSA BIN HAJI AMAN, AT THE FLAG OFF SPECIAL OLYMPICS SABAH “RUN TO INCLUDE 2018”, ON 11TH FEBRUARY 2018, AT FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON. PIAZA AREA, HARBOUR MALL SANDAKAN
I thank Special Olympics Sabah, its Acting President Encik Taren Sunil Manoharan and the Committee for this invitation to flag off this run. Kudos to Special Olympics Sabah on your continuous efforts in organising events to raise awareness and funds to support activities for the intellectually challenged members of our society.
I am happy to hear that many have shown their support for this good cause by signing up for the run. I believe many of you are aware of the activities that SOS has organised over the years to include intellectually challenged people into sports and other healthy activities. The efforts of SOS have also enabled those with intellectually challenges to be better accepted into society, and to gain self confidence as they become adults.
I understand that SOS has even succeeded in producing world class athletes who have brought sports glory to Sabah. We should all be very proud of the two SMK Muhibbah Sandakan special athletes who won gold and bronze medals at the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Ramsau, Austria in March last year. They are seventeen year old Norysuhadatul Aulia Saidina Maarufi won two gold medals in the 100m and 200m snowshoeing event and fifteen year old Noraini Binti Zakaria won an individual gold medal and a team bronze medal. Well done to both of them!
The Special Olympics World Winter Games involved around 2,700 athletes from 107 nations and we should all be proud of the achievements of our two Sabah girls. They have brought pride and joy to the state and to Malaysia. Participants at today’s Run To Include 2018 would be pleased to know that by taking part in this event your contribution could help SOS produce more future champions.
This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of the formation of SOS and the committee will be organising a Sabah-level Sports Carnival in Sandakan. It is my hope that those present here this morning and the wider public will also support that event.
The Sabah State Government is supportive of voluntary organisations such as SOS and has through various ministries and agencies contributed funds to help them play an effective role in promoting an active and healthy society. As a government that cares for all, we will continue to support such organisations. It is also my hope that more from the private sector and members of the public support such organisations and the programmes that they hold.
I know everyone is eager to start running and I do not wish to keep you waiting any longer. On behalf of the Chief Minister of Sabah, I wish to flag off the Special Olympics Sabah Run To Include 2018. Thank you.
