At the beginning of the independence of Sabah in Malaysia, the Protocol Unit exists only as a small unit in form of ‘ad hoc’ of each festival, visit from VIPs and others. This unit is managed by administrative officer called as Protocol Officer. Protocol Officer is the head of the unit and assisted by a limited number of staff in the State Secretary Office.
At the end of 70’s, Protocol Unit known as the Protocol and Ceremonial Division. It starts to function as a division at Chief Minister’s Office to address the protocol affairs. The role became more significant when the State Government began to extend the relationship with the local and international VIPs by inviting them to come to invest various enterprise to develop this State.
The Protocol & Ceremonial Division, Chief Minister's Department is responsible to the Secretary of the State in the ceremonial and protocol affairs in Sabah and elements that associated with the operation of the Official Government Ceremony and Government Official Visits.
