The Artist

Sedin Hj. Sharid who hails from Semporna is a trained teacher. He is a Vocation that normally restricts actively indulging in art activities but this self-taught artist will not allow such a circumstance to rob him of the chance to be in the art scene and surely not from the Sabah Annual Art Selection. He id amongst several artists who will only lift up their brushes so as to be able to participate in this popular annual art event. This adamant few has earned them the ‘competition artist’ repute.

Consequently, people who fancy his art will only see his work in work in those pieces from the annual selection that now reside in the permanent collection of the Sabah Art Gallery. Although he is not formally trained he has displayed a keenness and interest in the human figure that many artists would happily shy away from.

He Normally paints in oil but he has on occasion attempted mixed media as is evident in one of his winning 1996 annual selection entry entitled ‘Mitos Mistik’. In this piece he incorporated woven beads into an effective symbolism that imbues the mysterious in expressing the mythical landscape an mystical belief of the indigenous people of Semporna.
