The Artist

Haji Mohd. Junaidi Bin Haji Ismail was born in Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan in 1938. He received his early education at Francis light school Penang and his Secondary Education at Singlap Secondary School, Singapore.

He got his teachers certificate at Kent Teachers Training College Sabah and the specialist teacher certificate at the specialist teachers training Institute Kuala Lumpur.

In 1970 he was offered a Scholarship from the British Council to proceed his highest studies in art Education at the Bretton Hall Wakefield, Yorkshire and Bradford Art College in England.

After completing his studies in England he was attached to Kent Teachers Training College Sabah as a senior art lecturer until he became the principal of the college

He received two awards from the Yang diPertua Negeri Sabah. B.S.K. (Bintang Setia Kinabalu), B.S.D.K. (Ahli Setia Darjah Kinabalu).

He is perhaps the only Sabah artist known to have taken collage and sculpture or construction art seriously and not just as an experimental or as school children classroom activities. His collage displayed his great sense or gift of composition of forms, shapes lines, textures and colors. A more intriguing display of imagination and ingenuity is being displayed in his sculpture and construction works in which broken down and discarded parts of fans, engines, building materials and so on are being assembled into a fascinating and beautiful creations.
