Save Water! Wasted Water Cost Money

Did You Know?

Water covers ¾ of the Earth’s surface. Nearly 97% of the Earth’s water is salt water unfit for human consumption. Another 2% is stored as freshwater in glaciers, ice cover and snowy mountain ranges. Only 1% of the Earth’s water can be recycled for commerce, agriculture, and domestic and public use.

Two-thirds of our body weight is water, while our blood and brains are 90% and 85% water respectively. Humans can go several weeks without food, but cannot survive more than several days without water. To maintain your health, you should drink at least 8 glasses (2 litres) of water a day.

Smart Ways to Save Water

Using more water-efficient products in the home not only saves water, it cuts down on water and energy bills and helps the environment as well.

IN THE BATHROOMS

  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and wash your mouth with a glassful of water.
  • Turn off the showerhead when applying soap on your body. A water-efficient showerhead may use as little as 7 litres of water per minute, compared to 15-25 litres/min. of a standard showerhead.
  • Clean the bathroom floor with a mop and a bucket of water. Avoid splashing water. Use a dual-flush water-saving toilet system: a half-flush uses only 3 litres of water compared to 12 liters for a typical single-flush toilet
  • Put some food colouring in the cistern. If the toilet bowl is stained the same colour, the cistern leaks and should be repaired immediately.

IN THE KITCHEN

  • Wash vegetables and fruits in a basin and reuse the washwater for your garden.
  • While Typical taps discharge 15-18 litres per minute, low-flow models use as little as 2 litres/min.

USING WASHING MACHINE

  • Use a full load for every wash. Or use the load selector so that the volume fits the load.
  • A water-efficient machine (usually a front loader) may use 1/3 the volume of a typical top-loading machine

OUTSIDE

  • Use a bucket of water and cloth/rag to wash your car. Use a hose with adjustable nozzle when wiping the car.
  • Use a broom to clean the pathway to your house. Avoid using water.
  • Use a hose with an adjustable nozzle or a garden watering can to water your plants.
  • Tighten the hose clamp so that no water leaks.
  • Collect rainwater and use it to water your plants. Avoid using pipe water for the plants.
